Acoustic powerfolk from Flanders

“The Unbelievable Strings”, that’s maybe the best way to translate Snaarmaarwaar’s tongue-twisting band name. Watching these young Belgians is always a happy surprise. What you see is a trio of musicians, but the stunning wall of sound they create with their acoustic instruments gives the impression of an explosive sextet. Once guitar, mandola and mandolin are plugged in, it’s very hard to stop these guys.

The music they play is firmly rooted in the of soil of Flanders, but they are not afraid to open doors and windows to welcome flavours of Portugese fado, Irish sessions and Italian sunshine. Old traditional tunes and newly composed pieces sit alongside one another, both lively and introverted, tender and rocking. The band’s interplay is tight – and the fun they have while playing is totally contagious.

So far, the trio have released three albums and have played on stages all across Europe and beyond: Nanjing Jazz and World Festival (China), Dranouter Festival (Belgium), Festival des Luthiers et Maîtres Sonneurs (France), TFF Rudolstadt (Germany), Kaustinen Folk Music Festival (Finland), Mandopolis (France), Viljandi Folk Music Festival (Estonia) and the Sunrise Celebration (UK)… This is Flemish folk, alive and kicking, standing tall in the world of today. Snaarmaarwaar are a true discovery!
